What is off piste? Generally it is considered terrain that is not on the piste but is still within the ski area. It won’t be groomed or prepared in any way but it would normally be patrolled.

What is backcountry? This is terrain that is out of resort, in unpatrolled areas and importantly where no avalanche control is done.  You may use lifts to get there or you may ski tour, or both, but you are heading into terrain where you need to look after yourself.

What is the difference between a guide and a ski instructor? Instructors are trained and qualified to teach skiing both on and off-piste and in the backcountry. Guides are trained and qualified to take people through the mountain safely and to teach mountain safety – not skiing.  Instructors cannot take clients onto unpatrolled glaciers – that is exclusively the domain of mountain guides.
